EAST CHICAGO, Ind. (WLS) -- A woman was killed and her husband injured when their car went off the edge of an old, unused bridge in East Chicago, Ind.

Police are trying to figure out how the vehicle managed to get several barriers at the Cline Avenue Bridge Saturday morning.

The passenger in the 2014 Nissan Sentra, Zohra Hussain, 51, died in the crash. Her husband, Iftikhar Hussain, 64, who was driving at the time of the accident, was transported to Methodist Hospital Northlake in stable condition.

The bridge has been out of service since 2009 and police say the car had to get past several barricades, including orange barrels and cones and large wood signs stating "Road Closed," to go over the edge of the bridge.

The crash remains under investigation.
