CHICAGO (WLS) -- Family and friends gathered Saturday to remember 17-year-old Vonzell Banks, who was fatally shot Friday afternoon.

Banks was playing basketball with a friend Friday afternoon at the Bronzeville park named for Hadiya Pendleton, a high school student killed in 2013 shortly after returning from performing at President Barack Obama's inauguration.

Relatives said Banks played drums for his church and was about to start a summer job.

"His spirit will live on with us forever," said Jeanette Banks, the victim's grandmother. "He was a very intelligent nice young man."

Loved ones released balloons to symbolize the hope the gun violence will end soon.

A 19-year-old was also shot in the park and sustained a gunshot wound to his foot.
