Chicago police took 33 people into custody after a standoff in the city's Edgewater neighborhood, officials say.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Dozens of people are in custody after an hours-long standoff with Chicago Police in the city's Edgewater neighborhood early Saturday morning.

The standoff began after officials say a man allegedly fired shots at police through a second-story apartment window in the building in the 6300-block of North Lakewood around 2:30 a.m. Saturday. The tactical team surrounded the area

The four-hour standoff ended peacefully around 6:30 a.m. when authorities pulled out people from inside the home one by one. Thirty-three people were taken into custody.

Neighbors said that although the area is not crime-free, it was a strange scene.

"I was really surprised because I feel like generally this is a safe area," said area resident Julia Garcia.

Police said the investigation is ongoing.

No one was hit by the gunfire and there are no reported injuries.
