CHICAGO (WLS) -- Police are questioning a "person of interest" after a child was shot in the Morgan Park neighborhood.

Police said a 7-year-old boy was shot in the shoulder around 3:20 p.m. Wednesday in an alley in the 10900-block of South Loomis. Police say he was not the intended target and was simply walking in his neighborhood.

Nearby residents who didn't want to speak on camera said they heard a flurry of gunfire and saw what appeared to be two boys, perhaps in their early teens, running from the scene. Witnesses said one of the boys was carrying a handgun.

"They're shooting at somebody else, and the little baby got shot. So we're not going to stop until we find out who these shooters are and where these weapons are," said Andrew Holmes, a community activist.

The boy was taken to Comer Children's Hospital, where he is in good condition.

"I'm asking the teachers, anybody that's absent from school, tomorrow turn those names over to the police department. I want to find out why they weren't in school, and where they were about this time when this child got shot," Holmes said.

Police have not offered a motive for the shooting or said how many people may have been involved.
