CHICAGO (WLS) -- The city closed the first 11 months of 2014 with the fewest murders in nearly 50 years, according to new crime statistics from the Chicago Police Department.

There were 13 fewer murders from January to November of 2014 than the same time period in 2013. Overall crime was down 13 percent, but shooting incidents were up 10 percent.

CPD Superintendent Garry McCarthy said at a press conference on Monday that 6,400 illegal guns have been recovered so far in 2014, which is about 19 illegal guns recovered per day in the last year.

McCarthy also said there have been fewer complaints against Chicago police officers.
