2 arrested in Vicente Mundo murder
Two men were arrested in the murder of Vicente Mundo, a U of I student reported missing Sunday.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WLS) -- Two men are charged in the murder of Vicente Mundo, a University of Illinois student who disappeared in Champaign last week.

Daniel Gonzalez and Reginald Scott are charged with first-degree murder and being held on $2 million bond. They were arrested Monday night, hours after Mundo's body was found in a rural area. Officials said Gonzalez knew his victim, and text messages show the two were going to meet when Mundo disappeared.

Champaign County Sheriff Dan Walsh said Mundo was fatally shot in the parking garage at his Champaign apartment, located in the 300 block of East Chalmers, last Sunday in a "pre-planned armed robbery ... involving relatively small amounts of marijuana and cash." Prosecutors allege Scott was hiding in the trunk of Gonzalez's car when Mundo got in. During the robbery attempt, Mundo was shot in the back of the head, prosecutors said. His body was dumped near rural Tolono, which is 20 miles south of Champaign, Walsh said.

Prosecutors said Gonzalez confessed to police and Scott was picked up after that.

Police said they recovered the handgun used in the murder on Tuesday morning. Mundo's car was also recovered and Gonzalez's vehicle was seized.

Sheriff Walsh said "tremendous cooperation" with several police agencies led to the quick charges in the case. University of Illinois Police Chief Jeff Christensen said the murder was an "isolated incident" and "tragedy for our community."

Mundo is from Chicago. He was studying at Champaign. His family held a vigil on Monday night.

"He was my angel, but somebody took him," said Isabel Salgado, victim's mother.
