Northbrook school bus hit by stray gunfire after dropping off students at Museum of Science and Industry

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A suburban school bus was hit by stray bullets after dropping off students at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago Tuesday.

The driver had dropped off third grade students from Westmoor School in Northbrook at the museum at 10:30 a.m. Police said the bus was in the 6600-block of South Stony Island Avenue at about 11:35 a.m., when it was hit by bullets police said.

Police said two people standing near the bus were arguing and began shooting, hitting the bus.

The First Student bus driver returned the damaged bus to the company's depot and a new bus was sent out to transport the students. The driver was shaken up but not injured.

"We respect parents and their decisions regarding the safety of their children," a spokesperson for Northbrook School District 28 said. "For every field trip, as is our policy, staff will analyze the educational value, student safety, parent concerns, heightened security alerts, and liability concerns before proceeding. We do not have any additional trips to the Museum of Science and Industry planned for this year."
