FAST FACTS:

Downers Grove North High opened its doors in 1928 and enjoys a rich history. Today, it is one of the highest quality high schools in the state with notable and numerous accomplishments.

CHALLENGING ACADEMICS

Our 2,132 students in grades 9-12 can choose from 200+ academic course offerings, and our graduation rates and readiness for college as measured by the ACT and other tests surpass state and national averages. Our rigorous program includes 27 Advanced Placement courses, and over a third of our students take advanced or honors courses. In 2013, 22 students were recognized in the National Merit Scholarship Program, including one who achieved the highest level: National Merit Scholar. In addition, 105 students were named Illinois State Scholars, and participation in National Honor, National Technical Honor and World Language societies is high.

The school has been recognized repeatedly by numerous publications, including U.S. News and World Report (Silver Medalist), Newsweek ("Best High Schools" in the Nation) and Chicago Magazine (Top Ten Schools in DuPage).

Beyond the classroom, we connect our students with professionals in the fields of math, science, technology and engineering by exposing them to real-life science experiments and applications. For example, students have participated in programs sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy's Argonne National Lab, Midwestern University and Morton Arboretum, to name a few.

SUPPORTIVE PROGRAMS

We believe that strength of character is as equally important as academics for our students to succeed in life. We created a program called "Positively North" that is focused on teaching students how to be respectful, responsible and engaged.

Governor Quinn declared October 15, 2013 as "Downers Grove North High School Day," praising our students for being inclusive by electing Anne Wagner, a special needs student who has suffered from leukemia, as homecoming queen. He said that we showed "in a very vivid, meaningful way, what including everyone is all about," and that he wants to continue that in all of Illinois.

North High was also recognized by the Illinois House of Representatives in House Resolution 625, citing the support that our students showed for a classmate as "both remarkable and uplifting and should be acknowledged and celebrated across the State of Illinois."

ENRICHING EXTRACURRICULAR OPPORTUNITIES

In addition to the comprehensive academics available to students, the school also offers enriching extracurricular programs. Over half of our students study art or music during the year and musicals, concerts, plays, parades and art exhibits are numerous. Over 50 band, choir, orchestra and jazz band students were just selected to perform at the Illinois Music Educators' Association district festival-and we have one of the largest representation of students in the region.

Our bands have a stellar reputation and have been invited to perform at venues throughout the country as well as internationally, including the New Year's Day parade in London and the St. Patrick's Day Parade In Dublin. An ongoing exchange with a Music School in Germany for the past 25 years affords students the opportunity to perform in Europe every other year.

Students will perform the play "12 Angry Jurors" this Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m. The play is a "gender blind" version of the classic play 12 Angry Men.

Our student artists receive awards yearly by the Scholastic Art Awards. Students received 28 national "Gold Key" awards and one student received the "American Vision" award-the most prestigious designation. In addition, a student received first place in the Congressional Art show

The majority of students take advantage of extracurricular opportunities and join one of the 45 clubs offered. Some of the academic enrichment clubs include Scholastic Bowl, SkillsUSA, Math Team and the award-winning Speech Team, which took fourth overall at state and celebrated its first national champion over the summer at the 2013 National Forensic League Tournament.

Students also excel athletically in our 28 programs, from football, softball, cross country and basketball to gymnastics, swimming and lacrosse.

Our Trojan Football team upset the undefeated Whitney Young Dolphins last Friday, and takes on the Wheaton Warrenville South Tigers at 7 p.m. on November 8, 2013.

An involved and supportive community helps North High in its continuous quest to improve on its core mission: to provide a caring and challenging environment where all students develop as lifelong learners to become contributing, responsible members of a changing world.
